I had enrolled last year- in  2015 but  I was not able to finish the course. I thought that the  issue presented could be interesting for me too but the course was  run for American teachers. I did enrol to check and see how it would work.I enrolled in January and  did the  6 week course from February to March. I could follow all the sessions and I must confess that I loved the ideas of learning about  a topic which is really important for educators and students. Here in Europe we still need to struggle as reading and writing skills need improvement . This is true in a digitalized society and for learners who are  living in the XXI century. Our students need to be able to read, understand and ask themselves questions about what they are learning.
The video with the presentation online was catching and  made me decide to enroll a second time.

WHY I  REALLY LIKED THIS  COURSE

What I really appreciated were the videos and the resources with lots of links to websites and materials online for going deeper into  DISCIPLINARY LITERACY. I chose  English and subjects related to it. It was the discovery of interesting paths into reading, learning and using web tools. These are some importantant document that were presented and which helped me understand the importance of  DISCIPLINARY  LITERACY.

We also had to plan an activity which I am sharing here and which is my inquiry-based project.

MY INQUIRY-BASED PROJECT
I teach English and German and I like teaching languages while I am also teaching about issues and topics for  discussion. I usually present  topics like WW1 and WW2 and the Holocaust  to my students in the last year of secondary school.
I chose  the topic " War and Peace and education" as this is a theme that usually meets the students' attention. Last year marked an important anniversary about WW1 and I decided to choose " sentences" about war, videos about WW1 and  the theme of today's wars.  I choose Sarajevo in the 1990s and a song  which is related to the sad years in Sarajevo.
The slide is a summary of the documents that I would use in class and out of class to brainstom the topic.







In week 3 we had to plan activities for close reading and chose to present two poems about WW1 :  I chose a reading with some  videos and  two poems  by important poets - OWEN  and   BROOKE.

The idea was to engage the students into a deeper meaning and two  different  attitudes towards war.


The next step would be to get into the 1990s  and  read about the experience of war by a teenager- ZLATA- who lived in Sarajevo . Her diary became an important document about the war in Bosnia and the link to today's reality was by reading documents about the sufferings of children in Siria ( document online  by SAVE THE CHILDREN).





EVALUATION OF THE PROJECT

Before submitting the project we were asked to work on the issue of evaluation and we were suggested some tools for evaluating projects .

I created two rubrics : one for checking the students' understanding  as regards the two poems about  WW1, while the second rubric is for  the students' group presentation after they had carried out their own research.  The skills involved were  reading, learning by sharing materials, collaborating and making presentations.  The final product would be an online presentation with the students describing what they had learnt.

I am working in Italy and we work in a different school system from the  USA but  the issue of  disciplinary literacy is important for us too.
I have learnt how to work in a different  way and  I am going to share it also because I would like to work on  PBL activities with my students. I like the idea of getting the students involved and in choosing to work on a project and making their own presentations.
 New tools are really important and we should all work in class and at home with these tools which  can enhance the students' learning and understand.

CREATING   DIGITAL TEXTBOOKS

I wrote about  EVO 2016 and  the sessions I did in the posts  I wrote last month.  This week I am going to write about the experience I had in  January and February when I could create  my ebook and  I shared ideas  about it among teachers and tutors online who were working in the session.

Before starting it I thought about the many changes we have had in education: the learning environment has  turned into  a community and teachers have become " facilitators" and "helpers" . More and more we learn by using new devices. Books have not disappeared but we work  by using new tools in presentations, in writing and in creating ebooks .
 The short story " The fun they had" by Asimov came to my mind when I thought about  ebooks.
 The protagonists of the story work alone from home and do not know what a  real  book meant for their ancestors.When I read the story I thought that education would not change: at that time I was studying at school and  my learning environment was  the teacher's desk, the blackboard and the book.  The first  CD-players were used when I was at  secondary school but I would never think about how we can work and learn now.
Books have always been my passion but now  I have learnt that teaching implies finding new ways for meeting the different learners and their  needs. In reading we can add now videos, songs and books are " cool" or they can become  cool. Engagement is the key word for creating  new books where our  students can widen their horizon and learn. We are the teachers but we are supporting them.

I belong to a generation of  readers and lovers of books , my education was based on the written text and some television but I feel that technology has enhanced our  way of learning and  teaching.

I have learnt about  e-books, but currently I am not using them with my students because the  internet is not working well and some of them do not have access to internet at home.   In spite of the drawbacks  I chose to do the course  and  learn about the  best ways I can create my ebooks and which tools we can use. More and more we will have to work by using tablets and works and materials in the cloud: I told  myself: " Just try and see what you can do".  

The experience was  great: I wish to thank all the  tutors online who facilitated our work and provided great tips and  suggestions while we  were thinking about our  ebook, we designed a plan of the ebook and we wrote it.  The final week was dedicated to the publishing of our activities and I must admit that  we were really great! We used different tools and  wrote books about grammar, stories and education. A great community online of learners.............. educators who were working on their  CPD.

The course was run by  Shelly  Sanchez Terrell and the team work created by  Janet Bianchini, Lucia Bartolotti, Sue Annan, Sylvia Guinan, Andrè J. Spang, Rosmery Ribera, Ozge Karaouglu, Natasa Bozic Grojic, Michelle  Worgan, Walton Burns, Tanya Trusler,  Debora Tebovich, Tyson Seburn, Peggy George and Maria  Irene  Albers De Urriola.

Key ideas and what I have learnt in the course

1) Think about what you want to write: how will your students get access to the book?  This implies that you need to choose the  ebook editor that can meet your  students and the devices that they can use to get access to the book online

2)  When choosing images, pictures, documents , videos or music  you need to give credit to the creators and most material is copyrighted. This implies that I do need to check and use  public domain material or creative commons.

3)Ebook creators can be many online but you are not sure about the future. Remember to keep a backup copy of your file with all the information.  In my case I used GOOGLESLIDES and saved a copy of the document in pdf too.

4) Before planning you  need to think about a tool which can help you  visualize what content you want to put in  your book. I have collected a lot of mind map  tools which I will use with my students- just check the page  

5) An ebook is not only a written text : it contains videos, activities and images. If you want to create your ebook remember to  write and design activities that can be engaging for your learners. 

I have checked online and used some ebook editors.I am still learning so I am sure that I will work online with the new EVO 2017  session.

3) I found Lucia  Bartolotti 's video interesting as she suggested  how to work and organize our files

I must admit that I usually keep a file in word but what she suggested was helpful as sometimes ebook creators do not exist anymore and you risk losing your work!

CO16 DAY 3 My Reflections

CO16   -  Day 3                 7th  February 2016 

This is the final part of the reflections based on some webinars which I watched on the Youtube for CO16 .

The session of the last day was full of interesting speakers. I particularly liked some as I was involved in the EVO sessions this year I  am going to write about  TECHNOCLIL in EVO 2016  session which was  presented on Sunday.

I was online and I could follow  Letizia and Daniela who were the tutors in the EVO SESSION about  Techno-Clil which I did for 5 weeks. 
They made a great presentation of the way they approached the course which was successful and attracted thousands of teachers , many are from Italy.
The activities they posted have been presented with lots of materials and webinars and they provided a general outlook of what we mean by  CLIL.
I have posted about my experience and I cannot but say  THANK YOU FOR WORKING ON LINE WITH US AND  FOR US!

I will check the other webinars next week,  meanwhile I want to thank the Mentor NELLIE DEUTSCH  who made the project possible.  I have learnt a lot .

C016 DAY 2 My Reflections

CO16   -  Day 2                 6th  February 2016 

The second day was a really engaging session, it is a pity I was not online. I was at school in the morning and in the afternoon so my reflections are based on what I saw in the recordings and I finished watching this week.

Mastermind Groups can help you improve instruction and learning while saving you tons of time.

What I have learnt about the group: RADICAL ENGLISH is a 
group of experienced, professional EFL/ESL teachers working based in Canada, Hungary, Portugal, Spain, the UK and the USA. They work online, support teachers, do podcasts and talk at conferences and seminars.There are different  areas of expertise and this is really important as you can teach and coach other  teachers.
This is what I have found on their website: it is a group of  teachers who work together and they share their experiences and work online. There are interesting presentations and you can see that they work hard to be " committed to teaching".  They share and learn together.

Once more we can see that we can live in different parts of the world and learn together

The webinar has been about the way you can start working online.

He has some  suggestions for working and meeting people: socialmedia are useful for posting videos and meeting people who might be interested in your  lessons.

- build  trust
- build desire about how you can help students

Judy Wong- Webinar " Teaching English Presentation Skills for the 21st Century...using TED talks."

Judy presented an interesting  session about the best ways our students can learn how to be great presenters by using  TED. I was favourably impressed by the way she described the approach to making presentations. The activities are for intermediate or upper-intermediate levels and advanced  students but  I liked the approach to what she pointed out in the presentation.  Practice is a key word in the way she asks her students to work and again she is a master in teaching how to carry out activities.
It is an interesting way for learning and  I must admit that TED is one of my favourite source of information and for activities!

CO16 DAY1 My Reflections

CO16   -  Introduction to the  CONFERENCE ON LINE   AND THE FIRST  DAY ONLINE

Last year I had the chance of following some webinars for  CO15. I first met Nellie Deutsch and her great team of  teachers who were working online.  I must  confess that I loved what I saw.  This year I could not follow most of the activities and I had to  do this  by watching the recorded sessions.  I am  pleased to write about the  online activities which summarize what is going on in education.  Here is the video with the official presentation.  Education and technology are revolutionizing our way of working.

As I was busy with the other sessions of  EVO I could only watch the  recorded webinars. They were interesting and motivating but I had to choose which  webinars I wanted to see, mainly because I was busy with most of the first term evaluation and I was not able to work online and do the webinars from school.

Bob Diotalevi  - Webinar " Copyrighting Cyberspace: Teaching Old Dogs New Clicks"

Education is in relationship to laws, this is true for  any place. What I have learnt is  that in need to know about  copyrights, the books I am using and what I am enabled to use. The problem is that what I have found out is that Italian laws are different from the USA. 
The short webinar made me understand that I need to google online " copyright in education in Italy" and as I have already posted  some comments in my  blog where I wrote about the EVO session about Copyrights, I need to learn and teach my students to do it as well. Think before you do something online: don't steal other people's copyrights.
As we work online we need to work by being sure that materials, videos, documents and pictures can be used without getting into  troubles with  laws.   Students need to be helped and supported in their online researches and projects.

" Webinar  -FLIPPED LEARNING THROUGH MOBILE  DEVICES"

The webinar which  I appreciated because it presented new apps and ways for flipping learning by using mobile devices.
I agree with what the presenter said: we can get our students engaged and share a lot of  activities.  She presented top quality lessons and this made me wish to start  using mobiles in my classes where students can work together and share materials.

The final part of the webinar presented also problems shared by the  learners: internet connection which can be poor or different  devices which cannot work well. I am positive, I think that technology will make progress and more and more  apps and devices will be integrated.


Rachel A. Sale PhD Webinar " Creating Measurable Learning Objectives and Aligning Them with Course  Activities"

"Students can become owners of their own learning process when they understand what is expected to demonstrate mastery. "

I had seen  Doctor Sale online in November. She is a great teacher who knows that " a good framework" in teaching can make a difference. She presented her ideas about how to support learners and she made me think that I do need to think about the way we teach. By applying  Bloom's taxonomy she used " action verbs" to describe how we should help  learners to get empowered. I am aware that we do need to work on lower order and higher order skills but it is the way the students learn that is important. A good designer in lesson planning needs to take  new media into consideration.  She mentioned   Twitter and I am aware that the more we get into this way of working and the more we can  support our learners and their process of learning.
I do need to work on the ideas she has presented and therefore I will try to follow her online and see what she is going to present us.
I have an account with  Twitter and  I might  create an account for my students as it is  a  versatile tool.  

Janet   Salmon- Webinar " Learning to Research. Researching to Learn"

Encourage development of critical thinking and inquiry skills by integrating online research activities into online or hybrid classes.

This was a great webinar. I have never heard any conference by Janet  Salmon but I was favourably impressed by her approach as the activities that she presented have to do with " meaningful" activities where people are active learners. Technologies can help us and this is the reason why I am following the webinars online. There are so many tools which we do need to learn about!
We can learn from the others and see how students can benefit from what we are doing in class and also out of class. 

The world from outside is now part of  our classes. 


Dawn Alderson Webinar "Twitter and student engagement: What is the value added?"

This webinar was an interesting presentation about the way Twitter can make our way of working become a more  engaging activity.

The webinar was a short description about what the speaker had been working on.  It was   a study  and it was mainly  carried out from a pedagogic point of view . She  could say that Twitter is a social media that enhances  reflections and  thinking  skills.

On the first day they had scheduled  Edda Ossiannlisson but there were  problems for her to get online and we could not see her. 
You and your  Professional Network- Ebba Ossiannlisson : this was the topic of her session and  I am going to learn more abut it by checking the slides she had prepared.
